The dense farming regions of Alicante, Murcia and Almeria_the site of Montemero_ are considered to have permanent water scarcity. 31.5% of Spain is already affected by desertification and in these areas it is likely to become irreversible if the environment becomes drier. The primary goal of the Desert Lab is to provide scientifically based research representative of the South-eastern region of Spain where risk of desertification is highest and access to such information is limited. The lab has successfully created several pilot technologies which revive local lands.
